One of our most recent projects involved upholstering a Victorian style sofa. We first had to remove the old, damaged fabric before cleaning and repairing the frame. Once the frame was in good condition, we selected new fabric and padding to replicate the original look of the sofa. The entire process was time-consuming, but the end result was a beautiful piece of furniture that will last for many years to come. Our clients were thrilled with the final product, and we were proud to have restored such a magnificent piece of history.
The craft behind a traditional sofa
Traditional sofas carry all the details modern pieces dropped: skirts, welt cord, rolled arms, and fabric patterns that need matching across every panel. That is precisely what makes redoing one satisfying, and precisely what makes it slow. Families hold on to these sofas for good reason.
Reupholstering a piece like this means patterning each section so florals and stripes flow unbroken from back to seat to skirt. The welt gets cut on the bias and sewn to follow every curve, and the arms are shaped by hand until the rolls match side to side. Underneath, we retie springs and replace padding with high-density foam so the sofa sits as good as it looks. Shortcuts show on traditional furniture faster than anywhere else, so we do not take them.
