A matched set is a different job from a sofa. Every decision gets made twice and has to land the same way both times: the same fabric from the same bolt, the same foam so one piece does not sit an inch higher than the other, the same depth on every button. This pair arrived in gold swirl velvet, a long three cushion sofa and a wide companion chair with carved wood showing all the way around, and not one of the four loose seat cushions still had its cover.
If you searched for sofa reupholstery Hershey PA and found this page, you may have a set like it: good bones, a tired cover, and a family not ready to let it go. Our furniture upholstery service rebuilds a lot of these, and a matched pair is the version we like best, because the finished pieces have to agree with each other and there is nowhere to hide.
Sofa Reupholstery Hershey PA: What Came Through the Door
The owner's note on the photos was short: Sofa and Chair, mid century wooden trim with diamond shape. The diamond shape is the button tufting on the backs, and the wooden trim is the whole argument for the piece. A serpentine crest rail carved along the top of each back, arms ending in a scrolled wood front, a scalloped apron under the seat, and beneath it all cabriole legs, the double curve that bows out at the knee and tucks back in at the foot. It is the French Provincial pattern American factories made in quantity through the middle of the last century, and this was a well built example of it.
The velvet was a gold cut pile with a raised swirl running through it, worn soft on the arms and shiny along the front rail. The tufted backs still held their diamonds. But all four seat cushions, three on the sofa and one on the chair, had lost their covers and sat there in bare muslin, cream colored and creased, like a bed with the sheets pulled off. The wood was dull and had gone pale on the crest rails and the knees of the legs where hands and vacuum cleaners hit it. None of that is structural. Tired finish on a tight frame is the best possible starting point.
Inside the Rebuild: Two Frames, One Set of Answers
The Strip Down
Everything comes off both pieces: cover, batting, foam, burlap, the old cushion cores, and every staple and tack that held them, until the frame is bare wood and wire. We strip a matched set together rather than one piece after the other, so the sofa and the chair teach us the same lessons at the same time: where the padding was thickest, how deep the buttons were pulled, how the welt ran along the arm. The long version of this stage on a single chair is in our walkthrough of how a chair gets reupholstered. Here it happened twice, side by side.
Springs and the Deck
Both pieces are built on sinuous springs, the flat zigzag wire that runs front to back under a seat and up through a back, clipped to the rails and tied across so the rows move together. On the sofa the seat deck is one long run of them across all three cushion positions, with upright posts dividing the back into bays. We checked every row for set, the permanent sag a spring takes after holding the same weight in the same spot for years. Rows that still held their arc were cleaned, re-clipped and retied. Rows that had gone soft were replaced. A deck has to come out level across its whole length, or the middle cushion sits in a dip for the rest of its life. Over the springs go burlap and a foundation layer so no wire telegraphs through the seat.
Foam, Cushions and Keeping the Pair Honest
This is where a matched set earns its name. Seat foam for the sofa and the chair was cut from the same high density stock at the same thickness, and the back padding was built to the same depth over the springs on both. It sounds obvious. It is also the step that gets skipped when two pieces are done at different times by different hands, and the result is a chair that sits an inch taller than the sofa beside it. Polyester batting wraps every foam edge. The four loose cushions were built new from the core out, with boxed covers sewn on our walking foot Consew machines and a welt around every edge. The piped line echoes the carved rail beneath it and gives each cushion a crisp edge.
The Diamond Tufting
The owner's diamond shape. Both backs are deep button tufted in a diamond grid, and on a set the grid has to agree across two pieces of very different width. We lay the stations out on the new foam from the original frame marks, chair first because it is the smaller field and sets the spacing, then carry the same measurements along the sofa back. Each button is pulled through the foam and tied off on the frame, and the fabric between stations is folded by hand so every pleat lies in the same direction at the same depth. On an ivory solid there is no pattern to hide behind. Every pleat shows.
The Fabric
The new cover is an ivory textured weave, a warm white with a fine nubbed surface that catches the light differently across the tufted back than on the flat run of the cushions. It lets the carved wood do the talking and gives each diamond a soft shadow at the fold. Ask about any fabric in the showroom library and we will tell you exactly what it is and how it cleans.
The Wood
The trim came back to a deep red-brown with a soft gloss. The pale patches on the crest rails and knees are gone, the grain is readable again, and the scrolled arm fronts have their shadow lines back. New fabric over dull wood always looks like a piece wearing borrowed clothes. New fabric over polished wood looks like the day it was bought.
Shop note: on a matched set, do not let anyone do the sofa this year and the chair next year. Fabric lots change, foam stock changes, and a tufting layout measured twice by two different hands never lands the same. Both pieces in, both pieces out, together.
"A set is a promise the two pieces make to each other. Our job is to make sure they still keep it when they go back in the room."Alex Levchuk, Alex Upholstery Shop

Options for Sofa Reupholstery in Hershey PA and Dauphin County
Hershey sits about thirty minutes west of us, straight out 422 through Palmyra, and the living rooms of Hershey, Hummelstown, Palmyra and the east side of Harrisburg hold a lot of formal sets like this one, handed down once already and waiting on a decision. We are based in Myerstown and we regularly serve Hershey and the rest of Dauphin County. Most of our sofa reupholstery Hershey PA work starts with a few photos from a phone, not a drive to the shop.
On a sofa or a set, the choices are yours:
- Cover material: textured solids like this ivory, performance fabrics for households with children and pets, velvets to keep the original feeling, or leather where the frame suits it
- Protecting a pale fabric: performance weaves that release stains, zippered cushion covers that come off for cleaning, or a darker seat cushion under a light tufted back
- Rebuild depth: full strip with springs, foam and cushions, as here, or a padding refresh under a new cover where the deck is still sound
- Tufting: keep the diamond grid, open it to a wider spacing, or go to a smooth or channeled back on the same frame
- Wood: refinish the frame to a deep polish, or clean and wax it and keep the old color
- Matching pieces: an ottoman, a second chair or a loveseat built to the same fabric lot and seat height
Every set is different once the covers come off, so we do not quote from a menu. Each job is quoted individually after we inspect the pieces in person or from your photos, and the answer comes from the person who will do the work. Send photos through the site, or call or text the shop at 717-383-6917.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, whenever you can manage it. The fabric is cut from one lot so the color matches, the foam from one stock so both pieces sit at the same height and firmness, and the tufting is measured once and carried across both backs. A set done in two stages by two shops rarely agrees with itself afterward. We schedule matched pieces as one job for that reason.
Almost certainly. Loose cushion covers are the hardest wearing part of any sofa and the first thing to go, and losing them says nothing about the frame underneath. On this set the frames were sound, the springs were retied and replaced only where fatigued, and the cushions were built new from the foam out. What ends a piece is a cracked frame or rot, not missing covers.
Not anymore, if you choose it with your eyes open. Performance weaves release most spills with water, and we can build the seat cushions with zippered covers that come off for cleaning. If you love the light look but worry about the seats, a darker cushion under the light tufted back is a real option. We will show you samples under the shop lights before you decide.
Either, your call. On this set the finish had worn through to pale wood on the crest rails and legs, so both frames were taken back and refinished to a deep red-brown with a soft gloss. Where the original finish is intact and you like the age on it, we clean and wax and leave the color alone. Refinishing adds time, and we tell you how much when we quote.
A full strip and rebuild of a set usually runs several weeks once the fabric is in hand, and fabric lead time is often the longest part. The two pieces move through the shop together, so the chair does not finish weeks ahead of the sofa. You get a realistic timeline with your quote. If you need the set by a specific date, tell us up front.
