We specialize in upholstery, so when we got a call to reupholster a Ethan Allen wingback chair, we were all in. The customer didn’t want anything too fancy, so we went with a neutral fabric that would compliment the rest of the decor in the room. The whole process took about 4 weeks from start to finish, and we’re happy to report that the customer was thrilled with the results. Nothing to hide behind
Mission furniture hides nothing. The wood frame is the design, so the leather on a mission style recliner has to sit square inside all that honest joinery: straight welts, even margins, cushions landing flush against the slats every single time. There is no skirt or fringe to cover a lazy line.
We cut top-grain leather for pieces like this and keep the detailing plain, the way the style demands. The reclining hardware gets checked and cleared while the piece is stripped, since it is far easier to cure a lazy mechanism before the new cover goes on than after. The cushions get fresh high-density foam so the seat sits as square as it looks. Plain-spoken work, done carefully, which suits our furniture reupholstery bench just fine.
