A cushion built for its window
No window seat is actually square. Walls bow, trim intrudes, and corners wander a few degrees, which is why a cushion made from measurements alone never quite fits. We template the opening itself, then cut high-density foam to match and wrap it in batting for a soft crown. A cushion should slide in with just enough friction to stay put.
The cover gets a zipper for cleaning and seams placed where they will not print through. Fabric choice matters here too, since window seats live in direct sun most of the day. Done right, a window seat cushion looks built-in, like the house came with it. Pieces like this one pair a carpenter’s build-to-suit bench with our cushion making, our favorite kind of collaboration. If the seat lid lifts for storage, we add a thin non-slip layer underneath so the cushion stays planted through daily use.
